SXSW Sydney is rolling out the red carpet for an electrifying week of film, stories, and screen culture like no other. From 13–19 October, the SXSW Sydney Screen Festival takes over cinemas across the city with seven jam-packed days of screenings — featuring more than 100 feature films, five world premieres, and 39 Australian premieres. Expect international discoveries, cult classics, and wild experiments you won’t find anywhere else.
Leading the charge is the highly anticipated Opening Night film Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, starring Jeremy Allen White. From there, the lineup explodes with headliner titles hot off the global festival circuit including Bugonia, Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie, Die My Love, If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, and Blumhouse’s spine-chilling Black Phone 2.
That’s just the beginning. Expect everything from Marion Cotillard in the spellbinding fantasy drama The Ice Tower, to Steve Buscemi in the sharp dark comedy Psycho Therapy, and Australian gems like Proclivitas and The Great Entertainer, the latter celebrating the legendary Brian Walsh with a world premiere and special in-conversation event.
Cult Classics Reimagined: Comedians Alexei Toliopoulos and Gen Fricker will host a riotous live script read of the Australian 1983 classic BMX Bandits. Plus, brace yourself for The Wicker Man Spotlight — a double feature pairing the 1973 cult original with Nicolas Cage’s infamous 2006 version.
Paul Feig Retrospective: Relive Bridesmaids on the big screen (including a Q&A with Paul Feig himself!), dive into The Heat, and binge the entire Freaks and Geeks series in a 14-hour marathon.
Episodic Premieres: From Stan’s hotly anticipated He Had It Coming to Mattie Do’s horror The Sleeping Beauty, the episodic slate proves TV is just as daring as cinema.
Shorts Explosion: This year’s expanded shorts program introduces spotlights on television pilots, horror anthologies, First Nations storytellers, and bold new voices. Charlie Kaufman leads the charge with his hypnotic short How To Shoot A Ghost starring Jessie Buckley.
Music Meets Screen: From King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard to Emily Wurramara, a curated selection of music videos showcases how filmmakers are reimagining the moving image.
The SXSW Sydney Screen Festival unfolds across Dendy Newtown, Ritz Cinemas, Palace Cinemas, and — for the first time — the Seymour Centre.
